Good Brakes News
Great news on the brakes, they’re going to cost us less $$$ than we previously thought.
Dave came over this afternoon for awhile and we worked away on the brakes. We got the font calipers off and measured the rotors. Both were at near-minimums for thickness, so we will need to replace those, but we could keep the calipers as backups. The pads were probably at about half thickness, so we kept the pads as backups for the race; we’ll want to put fresh pads on.
The rear axle was a different story entirely. The rotors have to be nearly new, as they barely had any wear on them at all. Both were within 0.003″ of new. The pads on both rear weels were very thick too. We should probably buy a pair of backup pads for the back just in case something horrible happens and we need to replace them following a collision or something of that nature, but barring that, it’s likely that the rear pads are good for the full race.
We pulled apart the front calipers and they are in the midst of being rebuilt. We got them scrubbed clean and all the interior parts are soaking in fresh brake fluid to get them clean. I’ll re-assemble the front calipers tonight. We will have to wait until the shipment with the brake parts arrives after Christmas, as it will also have the rear caliper rebuild kit. Nobody has one in stock in Dallas.
Other good news is that with the headlights removed, it will be easy to route some cool air ducting from the front end of the car over to the front brake area. I’m thinking that maybe taping together some paper towel rolls will suffice.
sorry i couldn’t make it over. I have been sick since Saturday…Finally getting over it tonight. Looks like the brake situation turned out great. Hopefully I can get over there soon. Would dryer duct work good for the fresh air to the brakes?
just thinking Pat that maybe we should try pulling the pads off of red to see if we can use those as backups vs. buying a brand new set as backups. Maybe we get lucky again. I looked at the Rockauto site tonight. The cheapest I saw for rotors (2) was $34. R1Concepts sells rotors in pairs for $28, but not clear how much the shipping is.
