Begging for Radio Systems

February 6th, 2009

Pat asked me to get Sampson Racing Communications to agree to loan us their “Expert Package” radio system plus the crew package for free. They said, “Sure…except for the part that bolts into the helmets. Once you put those in, you can’t use them again. Each helmet setup will cost you $140.”

So, the question is, do we want to pay that?

Note for the hygenically minded: It’s not as nasty sharing helmets (from a radio perspective) as you might think: Sampson would give us sets of ear buds for each driver. That’s the part that actually goes in your ears.

YES YES YES DO IT! Pull the trigger. If you need me to charge it, let me know, but let’s get it moving this way ASAP so we can have it ready and testable for next week’s track session.

We will not, cannot find a better deal than this. Trust me. Matt and I have spent way, way, way too many hours to date discussing and researching this. Awesome, Brad. Strong work as always.

Well, OK. How many helmet setups/ear buds do we need?

1 helmet setup (since it sounds like you, me, Dave, and Matt will all share 1 helmet, icky but cheaper) and 6 sets of earbuds.

By earbuds I assume you just mean the foam tips. I say 6 sets because those are super cheap and it would be good to have a couple extra sets around in case some get lost/misplaced.

Again, fantastic work, Brad. I’ll add Sampson to our blogroll as a sponsor too. Awesome!

Wouldn’t we need to get an additional setup for Sam?

That is awesome. I’ve got the radios that were loaned to us by a family friend…but they’re just not going to work. I was getting so discouraged by the radio situation, so I’m pumped that it’s working out for us. As I’ve said before, there are a lot of things that we can make a go/no-go decision on which ultimately won’t be the difference between success and failure. But getting blacked because the driver doesn’t know about a yellow would be one of those things that directly leads to failure/poor performance, and the radios will go a long way toward eliminating that risk. Thanks Brad: bra-vo sir.

Thanks, Matt. It’s all in the wrist.
