D-12: Monday Night

October 13th, 2009

Final race prep was a little anti-climactic last night. The vinyl car numbers arrived in the mail, so I put those on the car. They look sharp and are a good contrast to the fuzzy white meatball on which they’re placed on the doors and roof of the car. It’s a LeMons-perfect kind of look. More after the break:

I went to start the car to try to correct the flaky tachometer issue that we’re having. Flipped on the ignition switch, pressed start, got nothing. Hmm. Checked all the plugs, everything’s plugged up. What’s the problem? Well, the problem seems to be that I left the kill switch in the “on” position after I pulled the car into the garage following the track day the last Saturday in September. 2+ weeks of battery drain (the car ECU draws power constantly if the kill switch is on) and the battery was down to about 8 volts when I tested it on the multimeter. So the battery got a recharge overnight and we’ll try again tonight. This issue is near the top of my to-do list because until I have it done I can’t reset the rev limiter, and that’s critical to our success in maintaining engine longevity. Engine longevity being the key to success in endurance racing.

I got the hood scoop (courtesy of LeMons judge Murilee Martin) structure all fixed up on Sunday, so I spent a little time last night cutting out cardboard templates. I’ll probably finish cutting and attaching thin metal roof flashing to the sides of the scoop structure to create a little ductwork to provide cold outside air to our intake. It’s nothing special in terms of performance, but it does look silly — again, a LeMons-perfect kind of look.

I worked on the driver’s side floor on Sunday afternoon and got the stock seat mounts all pulled out to make more room for our taller drivers. The new FIA-homologated seat slides should be here tomorrow so I can start fabricating our new seat mount system later this week. Should be more room under the cage for everybody now.

The TARP North guys are shipping down the kicked-out 8-qt oil pan sometime this week, hopefully I’ll get it in time to install it before we go down to Houston. The train pulls out of Dallas sometime around noon on the 22nd.
